Historical References

A warhammer was a blunt weapon made to be used against plate armor, similar to the Mace. It was used from the late 14th century up to the 16th century.

The head was usually shaped with 4 spikes to get a better "grip" on plate armor instead of just glancing off. The back spike was usually longer than depicted in mordhau and primarily used to penetrate lighter armor like Gambeson or even Chainmail, it wasn't used against plate armor since it can't punch through it and would usually just glance off if the alignment isn't perfect.

Related weapons are the Maul and the Polehammer.
